When I was a kid, my mom would make this comforting stew all the time. I’d catch a glimpse of her draining the chickpeas, then sneak into the kitchen to grab a taste of the golden salsita or what I called “the little sauce,” the broth of the stew. “Karla!” she’d exclaim, shooing me out of the kitchen. “Salte de ahí!” Whether I ate it by itself or drizzled it over white rice, that stew always tasted like comfort. It wasn’t until later that I learned that chickpeas were loaded with great stuff like magnesium, zinc, and fiber. Sometimes kids do know what’s good for them!
